How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
  2. Multiply: 0.75 × 27 = 20.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 20.25 ÷ 27 × 100 = 75%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/27, so part = 75 × 27 ÷ 100 = 20.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =75%*27. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

20.25 is the 75% share of 27. The remaining 25% is 6.75, and the two parts add back up to 27.

Discounts: 75% off an item priced $27 saves $20.25, so you pay $6.75.

Adding and taking away 75%

Increasing 27 by 75% gives 47.25 and decreasing it by 75% gives 6.75. These do not cancel out: raising 27 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 11.8125, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.
