How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
  2. Multiply: 0.75 × 56 = 42
  3. Check: Work backwards: 42 ÷ 56 × 100 = 75%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/56, so part = 75 × 56 ÷ 100 = 42. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =75%*56. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

42 is the 75% share of 56. The remaining 25% is 14, and the two parts add back up to 56.

Discounts: 75% off an item priced $56 saves $42, so you pay $14.

Adding and taking away 75%

Increasing 56 by 75% gives 98 and decreasing it by 75% gives 14. These do not cancel out: raising 56 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 24.5, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.
