How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
  2. Multiply: 0.75 × 63 = 47.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 47.25 ÷ 63 × 100 = 75%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/63, so part = 75 × 63 ÷ 100 = 47.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =75%*63. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

47.25 is the 75% share of 63. The remaining 25% is 15.75, and the two parts add back up to 63.

Discounts: 75% off an item priced $63 saves $47.25, so you pay $15.75.

Adding and taking away 75%

Increasing 63 by 75% gives 110.25 and decreasing it by 75% gives 15.75. These do not cancel out: raising 63 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 27.5625, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.
