How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 90 ÷ 100 = 0.9
- Multiply: 0.9 × 10 = 9
- Check: Work backwards: 9 ÷ 10 × 100 = 90%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 90/100 = part/10, so part = 90 × 10 ÷ 100 = 9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =90%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9 is the 90% share of 10. The remaining 10% is 1, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Adding and taking away 90%
Increasing 10 by 90% gives 19 and decreasing it by 90% gives 1. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 90% and then lowering the result by 90% ends at 1.9, because the second 90% is taken of a bigger number.
