How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 35 = 14
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14 ÷ 35 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/35, so part = 40 × 35 ÷ 100 = 14. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*35. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14 is the 40% share of 35. The remaining 60% is 21, and the two parts add back up to 35.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $35 saves $14, so you pay $21.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 35 by 40% gives 49 and decreasing it by 40% gives 21. These do not cancel out: raising 35 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 29.4, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
