How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 79 ÷ 100 = 0.79
  2. Multiply: 0.79 × 1 = 0.79
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.79 ÷ 1 × 100 = 79%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 79/100 = part/1, so part = 79 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.79. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =79%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.79 is the 79% share of 1. The remaining 21% is 0.21, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 79% off an item priced $1 saves $0.79, so you pay $0.21.

Adding and taking away 79%

Increasing 1 by 79% gives 1.79 and decreasing it by 79% gives 0.21. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 79% and then lowering the result by 79% ends at 0.3759, because the second 79% is taken of a bigger number.
