How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 100 = 25
- Check: Work backwards: 25 ÷ 100 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/100, so part = 25 × 100 ÷ 100 = 25. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
25 is the 25% share of 100. The remaining 75% is 75, and the two parts add back up to 100.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $100 saves $25, so you pay $75.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 100 by 25% gives 125 and decreasing it by 25% gives 75. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 93.75, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 100% of 25. 25% of 100 and 100% of 25 are always equal (both are 25 × 100 ÷ 100 = 25), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
