How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
- Multiply: 0.08 × 14 = 1.12
- Check: Work backwards: 1.12 ÷ 14 × 100 = 8%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/14, so part = 8 × 14 ÷ 100 = 1.12. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =8%*14. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.12 is the 8% share of 14. The remaining 92% is 12.88, and the two parts add back up to 14.
Discounts: 8% off an item priced $14 saves $1.12, so you pay $12.88.
Adding and taking away 8%
Increasing 14 by 8% gives 15.12 and decreasing it by 8% gives 12.88. These do not cancel out: raising 14 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 13.9104, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 14% of 8. 8% of 14 and 14% of 8 are always equal (both are 8 × 14 ÷ 100 = 1.12), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
