How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
  2. Multiply: 0.08 × 81 = 6.48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.48 ÷ 81 × 100 = 8%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/81, so part = 8 × 81 ÷ 100 = 6.48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =8%*81. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.48 is the 8% share of 81. The remaining 92% is 74.52, and the two parts add back up to 81.

Discounts: 8% off an item priced $81 saves $6.48, so you pay $74.52.

Adding and taking away 8%

Increasing 81 by 8% gives 87.48 and decreasing it by 8% gives 74.52. These do not cancel out: raising 81 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 80.4816, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.
