How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
- Multiply: 0.8 × 13 = 10.4
- Check: Work backwards: 10.4 ÷ 13 × 100 = 80%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/13, so part = 80 × 13 ÷ 100 = 10.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
10.4 is the 80% share of 13. The remaining 20% is 2.6, and the two parts add back up to 13.
Discounts: 80% off an item priced $13 saves $10.4, so you pay $2.6.
Adding and taking away 80%
Increasing 13 by 80% gives 23.4 and decreasing it by 80% gives 2.6. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 4.68, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
