How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 80 = 32
  3. Check: Work backwards: 32 ÷ 80 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/80, so part = 40 × 80 ÷ 100 = 32. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

32 is the 40% share of 80. The remaining 60% is 48, and the two parts add back up to 80.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $80 saves $32, so you pay $48.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 80 by 40% gives 112 and decreasing it by 40% gives 48. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 67.2, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
