How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 25 = 20
  3. Check: Work backwards: 20 ÷ 25 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/25, so part = 80 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

20 is the 80% share of 25. The remaining 20% is 5, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $25 saves $20, so you pay $5.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 25 by 80% gives 45 and decreasing it by 80% gives 5. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 9, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
