How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 84 ÷ 100 = 0.84
- Multiply: 0.84 × 2 = 1.68
- Check: Work backwards: 1.68 ÷ 2 × 100 = 84%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 84/100 = part/2, so part = 84 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.68. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =84%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.68 is the 84% share of 2. The remaining 16% is 0.32, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 84% off an item priced $2 saves $1.68, so you pay $0.32.
Adding and taking away 84%
Increasing 2 by 84% gives 3.68 and decreasing it by 84% gives 0.32. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 84% and then lowering the result by 84% ends at 0.5888, because the second 84% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 84. 84% of 2 and 2% of 84 are always equal (both are 84 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.68), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
