How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 84 = 1.68
- Check: Work backwards: 1.68 ÷ 84 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/84, so part = 2 × 84 ÷ 100 = 1.68. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*84. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.68 is the 2% share of 84. The remaining 98% is 82.32, and the two parts add back up to 84.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $84 saves $1.68, so you pay $82.32.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 84 by 2% gives 85.68 and decreasing it by 2% gives 82.32. These do not cancel out: raising 84 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 83.9664, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
