How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
  2. Multiply: 0.09 × 63 = 5.67
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.67 ÷ 63 × 100 = 9%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/63, so part = 9 × 63 ÷ 100 = 5.67. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =9%*63. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.67 is the 9% share of 63. The remaining 91% is 57.33, and the two parts add back up to 63.

Discounts: 9% off an item priced $63 saves $5.67, so you pay $57.33.

Adding and taking away 9%

Increasing 63 by 9% gives 68.67 and decreasing it by 9% gives 57.33. These do not cancel out: raising 63 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 62.4897, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
