How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 97 ÷ 100 = 0.97
  2. Multiply: 0.97 × 50 = 48.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 48.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 97%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 97/100 = part/50, so part = 97 × 50 ÷ 100 = 48.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =97%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

48.5 is the 97% share of 50. The remaining 3% is 1.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 97% off an item priced $50 saves $48.5, so you pay $1.5.

Adding and taking away 97%

Increasing 50 by 97% gives 98.5 and decreasing it by 97% gives 1.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 97% and then lowering the result by 97% ends at 2.955, because the second 97% is taken of a bigger number.
