How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Divide the part by it: 75 ÷ 0.5 = 150
  3. Check: Work forwards: 50% of 150 is 0.5 × 150 = 75.

Another method. As a proportion: 75/whole = 50/100, so whole = 75 × 100 ÷ 50 = 150. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =75/50%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 50% is 75, then 1% is 75 ÷ 50 = 1.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 15, 50% is 75 and 100% is 150.
