How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
  2. Divide the part by it: 10 ÷ 0.05 = 200
  3. Check: Work forwards: 5% of 200 is 0.05 × 200 = 10.

Another method. As a proportion: 10/whole = 5/100, so whole = 10 × 100 ÷ 5 = 200. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10/5%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

10 is the 5% share of 200. The other 95% is 190.

Discounts: if 10 dollars is a 5% saving, the original price was $200.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 5% is 10, then 1% is 10 ÷ 5 = 2, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 20, 50% is 100 and 100% is 200.
