How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Divide the part by it: 65 ÷ 0.1 = 650
  3. Check: Work forwards: 10% of 650 is 0.1 × 650 = 65.

Another method. As a proportion: 65/whole = 10/100, so whole = 65 × 100 ÷ 10 = 650. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65/10%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
