How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
- Divide the part by it: 90 ÷ 0.5 = 180
- Check: Work forwards: 50% of 180 is 0.5 × 180 = 90.
Another method. As a proportion: 90/whole = 50/100, so whole = 90 × 100 ÷ 50 = 180. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =90/50%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.
