How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Divide the part by it: 100 ÷ 0.1 = 1,000
  3. Check: Work forwards: 10% of 1,000 is 0.1 × 1,000 = 100.

Another method. As a proportion: 100/whole = 10/100, so whole = 100 × 100 ÷ 10 = 1,000. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =100/10%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

100 is the 10% share of 1,000. The other 90% is 900.

Discounts: if 100 dollars is a 10% saving, the original price was $1,000.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 10% is 100, then 1% is 100 ÷ 10 = 10, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 100, 50% is 500 and 100% is 1,000.
