How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Divide the part by it: 90 ÷ 0.6 = 150
  3. Check: Work forwards: 60% of 150 is 0.6 × 150 = 90.

Another method. As a proportion: 90/whole = 60/100, so whole = 90 × 100 ÷ 60 = 150. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =90/60%. Multiplying the part by the percentage instead of dividing gives a smaller number. The whole must be bigger than the part whenever the percentage is below 100.

What the result means

90 is the 60% share of 150. The other 40% is 60.

Discounts: if 90 dollars is a 60% saving, the original price was $150.

Using 1% as a stepping stone

If 60% is 90, then 1% is 90 ÷ 60 = 1.5, and any other percentage follows: 10% is 15, 50% is 75 and 100% is 150.
