How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 50% of 200 = 0.5 × 200 = 100
- Take it off the price: 200 − 100 = 100
- Check: Add the saving back: 100 + 100 = 200.
Another method. In one step: you pay 50% of the price, so 0.5 × 200 = 100. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =200*(1-50%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 50% off, you pay 50% of the price: 100 instead of 200, a saving of 100.
Shopping: an item marked $200 with 50% off costs $100 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
50% off followed by another 50% off is 75% off in total, not 100%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 50% of 200. Two discounts do not add up: 50% off and then another 50% off leaves 50, not 0, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
