How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 20% of 200 = 0.2 × 200 = 40
- Take it off the price: 200 − 40 = 160
- Check: Add the saving back: 160 + 40 = 200.
Another method. In one step: you pay 80% of the price, so 0.8 × 200 = 160. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =200*(1-20%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 20% off, you pay 80% of the price: 160 instead of 200, a saving of 40.
Shopping: an item marked $200 with 20% off costs $160 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
20% off followed by another 20% off is 36% off in total, not 40%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 20% of 200. Two discounts do not add up: 20% off and then another 20% off leaves 128, not 120, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
