How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 75% of 50 = 0.75 × 50 = 37.5
- Take it off the price: 50 − 37.5 = 12.5
- Check: Add the saving back: 12.5 + 37.5 = 50.
Another method. In one step: you pay 25% of the price, so 0.25 × 50 = 12.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =50*(1-75%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 75% off, you pay 25% of the price: 12.5 instead of 50, a saving of 37.5.
Shopping: an item marked $50 with 75% off costs $12.5 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
75% off followed by another 75% off is 93.75% off in total, not 100%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 75% of 50. Two discounts do not add up: 75% off and then another 75% off leaves 3.13, not 0, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
