How to work it out

  1. Work out the discount: 60% of 30 = 0.6 × 30 = 18
  2. Take it off the price: 30 − 18 = 12
  3. Check: Add the saving back: 12 + 18 = 30.

Another method. In one step: you pay 40% of the price, so 0.4 × 30 = 12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =30*(1-60%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.

What the result means

After 60% off, you pay 40% of the price: 12 instead of 30, a saving of 18.

Shopping: an item marked $30 with 60% off costs $12 at the till, before any sales tax.

Stacked discounts

60% off followed by another 60% off is 84% off in total, not 100%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 60% of 30. Two discounts do not add up: 60% off and then another 60% off leaves 4.8, not 0, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
