How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 10% of 30 = 0.1 × 30 = 3
- Take it off the price: 30 − 3 = 27
- Check: Add the saving back: 27 + 3 = 30.
Another method. In one step: you pay 90% of the price, so 0.9 × 30 = 27. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =30*(1-10%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 10% off, you pay 90% of the price: 27 instead of 30, a saving of 3.
Shopping: an item marked $30 with 10% off costs $27 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
10% off followed by another 10% off is 19% off in total, not 20%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 10% of 30. Two discounts do not add up: 10% off and then another 10% off leaves 24.3, not 24, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
