How to work it out
- Work out the discount: 20% of 30 = 0.2 × 30 = 6
- Take it off the price: 30 − 6 = 24
- Check: Add the saving back: 24 + 6 = 30.
Another method. In one step: you pay 80% of the price, so 0.8 × 30 = 24. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =30*(1-20%). Taking the percentage of the price gives the saving, not the price you pay. Subtract it, or multiply by the share that is left.
What the result means
After 20% off, you pay 80% of the price: 24 instead of 30, a saving of 6.
Shopping: an item marked $30 with 20% off costs $24 at the till, before any sales tax.
Stacked discounts
20% off followed by another 20% off is 36% off in total, not 40%: the second discount applies to the lower price.

The other way round: 20% of 30. Two discounts do not add up: 20% off and then another 20% off leaves 19.2, not 18, because the second discount is taken of the lower price.
