How to work it out
- Difference: 60 − 10 = 50
- Divide by the starting value: 50 ÷ 10 = 5
- Multiply by 100: 500%
- Check: Work forwards from the start: 10 × (1 + 5) = 10 × 6 = 60.
In a spreadsheet: =(60-10)/10*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.
What the result means
The new value is 6 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 600. The value has more than doubled.
Prices: an item whose price rises from $10 to $60 has gone up by 500%.
Why the change back is different
A 500% rise followed by a 500% fall does not bring you back to 10: it gives -240. The second percentage is taken of 60, not of 10, so to undo this change you need 83.3333% instead.

The other way round: Percentage change from 60 to 10. Percentage change is not symmetric: from 10 to 60 is 500%, but from 60 back to 10 is -83.3333%, because the starting value is the base. For a comparison that is the same both ways, use the percentage difference between 10 and 60: 142.8571%. See Percentage difference between 10 and 60.
