How to work it out
- Difference: 27 − 24 = 3
- Divide by the starting value: 3 ÷ 24 = 0.125
- Multiply by 100: 12.5%
- Check: Work forwards from the start: 24 × (1 + 0.125) = 24 × 1.125 = 27.
In a spreadsheet: =(27-24)/24*100. Always divide by the starting value, not the new one. A rise from 40 to 50 is +25%, but the fall from 50 back to 40 is −20%.
What the result means
The new value is 1.125 times the old one: for every 100 at the start there are now 112.5.
Prices: an item whose price rises from $24 to $27 has gone up by 12.5%.
Why the change back is different
A 12.5% rise followed by a 12.5% fall does not bring you back to 24: it gives 23.625. The second percentage is taken of 27, not of 24, so to undo this change you need 11.1111% instead.
