How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 1 = 0.01
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.01 ÷ 1 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/1, so part = 1 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.01 is the 1% share of 1. The remaining 99% is 0.99, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $1 saves $0.01, so you pay $0.99.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 1 by 1% gives 1.01 and decreasing it by 1% gives 0.99. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 0.9999, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
