How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 31 = 0.31
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.31 ÷ 31 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/31, so part = 1 × 31 ÷ 100 = 0.31. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*31. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.31 is the 1% share of 31. The remaining 99% is 30.69, and the two parts add back up to 31.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $31 saves $0.31, so you pay $30.69.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 31 by 1% gives 31.31 and decreasing it by 1% gives 30.69. These do not cancel out: raising 31 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 30.9969, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
