How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 30 = 4.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.5 ÷ 30 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/30, so part = 15 × 30 ÷ 100 = 4.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.5 is the 15% share of 30. The remaining 85% is 25.5, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $30 saves $4.5, so you pay $25.5.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 30 by 15% gives 34.5 and decreasing it by 15% gives 25.5. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 29.325, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 30% of 15. 15% of 30 and 30% of 15 are always equal (both are 15 × 30 ÷ 100 = 4.5), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
