How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 25 = 2.5
- Check: Work backwards: 2.5 ÷ 25 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/25, so part = 10 × 25 ÷ 100 = 2.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.5 is the 10% share of 25. The remaining 90% is 22.5, and the two parts add back up to 25.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $25 saves $2.5, so you pay $22.5.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 25 by 10% gives 27.5 and decreasing it by 10% gives 22.5. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 24.75, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
