How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 72 = 0.72
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.72 ÷ 72 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/72, so part = 1 × 72 ÷ 100 = 0.72. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*72. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.72 is the 1% share of 72. The remaining 99% is 71.28, and the two parts add back up to 72.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $72 saves $0.72, so you pay $71.28.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 72 by 1% gives 72.72 and decreasing it by 1% gives 71.28. These do not cancel out: raising 72 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 71.9928, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
