How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
- Multiply: 0.75 × 100 = 75
- Check: Work backwards: 75 ÷ 100 × 100 = 75%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/100, so part = 75 × 100 ÷ 100 = 75. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =75%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
75 is the 75% share of 100. The remaining 25% is 25, and the two parts add back up to 100.
Discounts: 75% off an item priced $100 saves $75, so you pay $25.
Adding and taking away 75%
Increasing 100 by 75% gives 175 and decreasing it by 75% gives 25. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 43.75, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 100% of 75. 75% of 100 and 100% of 75 are always equal (both are 75 × 100 ÷ 100 = 75), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
