How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 91 = 0.91
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.91 ÷ 91 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/91, so part = 1 × 91 ÷ 100 = 0.91. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*91. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.91 is the 1% share of 91. The remaining 99% is 90.09, and the two parts add back up to 91.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $91 saves $0.91, so you pay $90.09.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 91 by 1% gives 91.91 and decreasing it by 1% gives 90.09. These do not cancel out: raising 91 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 90.9909, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
