How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 12 = 1.2
- Check: Work backwards: 1.2 ÷ 12 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/12, so part = 10 × 12 ÷ 100 = 1.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.2 is the 10% share of 12. The remaining 90% is 10.8, and the two parts add back up to 12.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $12 saves $1.2, so you pay $10.8.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 12 by 10% gives 13.2 and decreasing it by 10% gives 10.8. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 11.88, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
