How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 14 = 1.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.4 ÷ 14 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/14, so part = 10 × 14 ÷ 100 = 1.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*14. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.4 is the 10% share of 14. The remaining 90% is 12.6, and the two parts add back up to 14.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $14 saves $1.4, so you pay $12.6.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 14 by 10% gives 15.4 and decreasing it by 10% gives 12.6. These do not cancel out: raising 14 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 13.86, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
