How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 15 = 1.5
- Check: Work backwards: 1.5 ÷ 15 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/15, so part = 10 × 15 ÷ 100 = 1.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.5 is the 10% share of 15. The remaining 90% is 13.5, and the two parts add back up to 15.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $15 saves $1.5, so you pay $13.5.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 15 by 10% gives 16.5 and decreasing it by 10% gives 13.5. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 14.85, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
