How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 10 = 1.5
- Check: Work backwards: 1.5 ÷ 10 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/10, so part = 15 × 10 ÷ 100 = 1.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.5 is the 15% share of 10. The remaining 85% is 8.5, and the two parts add back up to 10.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $10 saves $1.5, so you pay $8.5.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 10 by 15% gives 11.5 and decreasing it by 15% gives 8.5. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 9.775, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
