How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
- Multiply: 0.75 × 400 = 300
- Check: Work backwards: 300 ÷ 400 × 100 = 75%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/400, so part = 75 × 400 ÷ 100 = 300. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =75%*400. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
300 is the 75% share of 400. The remaining 25% is 100, and the two parts add back up to 400.
Discounts: 75% off an item priced $400 saves $300, so you pay $100.
Adding and taking away 75%
Increasing 400 by 75% gives 700 and decreasing it by 75% gives 100. These do not cancel out: raising 400 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 175, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 400% of 75. 75% of 400 and 400% of 75 are always equal (both are 75 × 400 ÷ 100 = 300), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
