How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 17 = 1.7
- Check: Work backwards: 1.7 ÷ 17 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/17, so part = 10 × 17 ÷ 100 = 1.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*17. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.7 is the 10% share of 17. The remaining 90% is 15.3, and the two parts add back up to 17.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $17 saves $1.7, so you pay $15.3.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 17 by 10% gives 18.7 and decreasing it by 10% gives 15.3. These do not cancel out: raising 17 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 16.83, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 17% of 10. 10% of 17 and 17% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 17 ÷ 100 = 1.7), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
