How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 1000 = 600
  3. Check: Work backwards: 600 ÷ 1000 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/1000, so part = 60 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 600. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*1000. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

600 is the 60% share of 1000. The remaining 40% is 400, and the two parts add back up to 1000.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $1,000 saves $600, so you pay $400.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 1000 by 60% gives 1,600 and decreasing it by 60% gives 400. These do not cancel out: raising 1000 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 640, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1000% of 60. 60% of 1000 and 1000% of 60 are always equal (both are 60 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 600), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
