How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 400 = 320
  3. Check: Work backwards: 320 ÷ 400 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/400, so part = 80 × 400 ÷ 100 = 320. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*400. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

320 is the 80% share of 400. The remaining 20% is 80, and the two parts add back up to 400.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $400 saves $320, so you pay $80.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 400 by 80% gives 720 and decreasing it by 80% gives 80. These do not cancel out: raising 400 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 144, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
