How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 90 ÷ 100 = 0.9
  2. Multiply: 0.9 × 45 = 40.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 40.5 ÷ 45 × 100 = 90%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 90/100 = part/45, so part = 90 × 45 ÷ 100 = 40.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =90%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

40.5 is the 90% share of 45. The remaining 10% is 4.5, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 90% off an item priced $45 saves $40.5, so you pay $4.5.

Adding and taking away 90%

Increasing 45 by 90% gives 85.5 and decreasing it by 90% gives 4.5. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 90% and then lowering the result by 90% ends at 8.55, because the second 90% is taken of a bigger number.
