How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 49 = 4.9
- Check: Work backwards: 4.9 ÷ 49 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/49, so part = 10 × 49 ÷ 100 = 4.9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*49. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.9 is the 10% share of 49. The remaining 90% is 44.1, and the two parts add back up to 49.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $49 saves $4.9, so you pay $44.1.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 49 by 10% gives 53.9 and decreasing it by 10% gives 44.1. These do not cancel out: raising 49 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 48.51, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
