How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 400 = 60
- Check: Work backwards: 60 ÷ 400 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/400, so part = 15 × 400 ÷ 100 = 60. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*400. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
60 is the 15% share of 400. The remaining 85% is 340, and the two parts add back up to 400.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $400 saves $60, so you pay $340.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 400 by 15% gives 460 and decreasing it by 15% gives 340. These do not cancel out: raising 400 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 391, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 400% of 15. 15% of 400 and 400% of 15 are always equal (both are 15 × 400 ÷ 100 = 60), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
