How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 49 ÷ 100 = 0.49
  2. Multiply: 0.49 × 10 = 4.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.9 ÷ 10 × 100 = 49%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 49/100 = part/10, so part = 49 × 10 ÷ 100 = 4.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =49%*10. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.9 is the 49% share of 10. The remaining 51% is 5.1, and the two parts add back up to 10.

Discounts: 49% off an item priced $10 saves $4.9, so you pay $5.1.

Adding and taking away 49%

Increasing 10 by 49% gives 14.9 and decreasing it by 49% gives 5.1. These do not cancel out: raising 10 by 49% and then lowering the result by 49% ends at 7.599, because the second 49% is taken of a bigger number.
