How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 400 = 240
  3. Check: Work backwards: 240 ÷ 400 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/400, so part = 60 × 400 ÷ 100 = 240. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*400. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

240 is the 60% share of 400. The remaining 40% is 160, and the two parts add back up to 400.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $400 saves $240, so you pay $160.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 400 by 60% gives 640 and decreasing it by 60% gives 160. These do not cancel out: raising 400 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 256, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 400% of 60. 60% of 400 and 400% of 60 are always equal (both are 60 × 400 ÷ 100 = 240), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
